It's that time of the year, when thousands of art lovers, collectors, curators, and museum directors will flood the picturesque town of Basel in Switzerland to attend to one of the most important year's art event's, Art Basel Week. Which are the art fairs and when they open their doors to the public? We've prepared a list with the 5 must-visit art fairs during June's Art Basel Week.

Art Basel

Since 1970, Art Basel has been presenting modern and contemporary art to a captivated audience of curators, collectors, museum directors and general public. The fair returns with presentations from 290 galleries all showing approximately 4,000 artists.

Split into a number of sections, from ‘Statements’, which showcases emerging artists, to ‘Edition’, a presentation of limited-edition works, Art Basel continues to push the parameters of the art-fair model.

Scope

With over 75 art fairs spanning more than 15 years, SCOPE Art Show has operated in Miami, New York, and Basel, Switzerland. It showcased international emerging contemporary art and multi-disciplinary creative programming. This year it will be its 13th edition, opening this June in Basel with over 70 exhibitors.

Volta

VOLTA art fair presents new international positions, a satellite fair that offers something for everyone. It debuted in 2005 as a collaboration between dealers and friends. The aim was to secure a platform for international galleries beyond young art stalwart Liste and market heavyweight Art Basel. In addition to the thematic displays and dual-artists booths, in which two artists work are showcased in dialogue with one another, eclectic and dynamic presentations with a strong focus on solo presentations find a stage as refined as at the main fair.

Located across from the Novartis Campus at Elsässerstrasse 215, just 9 minutes away from the main fair and within the neighborhood of the very first venue at Voltaplatz. VOLTA sets the tone and plants its (artistic) flag as the first major event within the space.

Photo Basel

Returning to the Volkshaus Basel for its 5th edition is Switzerland’s only fair dedicated to photography. Founded in 2015 by Sven Eisenhut, Photo Basel showcases the diversity of photographic practices from the historic and documentary to the contemporary and conceptual. Curated by photography expert Daniel Blochwitz, an expert in photography, the fair runs from June 11 - 16, 2019

This year the fair will be expanding to span two floors of the Volkshaus Basel for the first time. photo basel brings together 41 exhibitors from both emerging and established galleries across 15 countries.

LISTE

LISTE Art Fair Basel, the international fair for new discoveries in contemporary art presented by a younger generation of galleries, announced its 24th edition, opening in June 10 till 16, 2019. The participating galleries will exhibit artistic positions that not only examine the present but also create it, through new aesthetics, media and values. Under the premise of promoting young art, the LISTE committee selected 77 galleries from 33 countries, with a strong focus on giving significant space to galleries from cities beyond the established art centres as well as on enabling galleries to show for the first time.
