Erato Kantouna is a Cypriot artist photographer, born in Famagusta in 1953. She is the first woman in Cyprus and Greece to obtain the reputable title of Excellence Federation International de l’Art Photographique (EFIAP/B). Her photographs have been featured in many International exhibitions around the world, receiving critical acclaim. She has participated in numerous National and International photography competitions, receiving many international awards, for her presentation of daily life, portraits, and the nature of her home country, and from her trips abroad. Her passion is capturing her subjects in black and white infrared film with her analog camera. She is one of the few photographers left carrying forward the dark room techniques and knowledge for developing black and white films.
‘Capturing time and space in a click always fascinated me. Being able to freeze a moment in a shot registering the past and present of people and cityscapes is what I’m most interested. Recording the authenticity of a space or a face, how it was and how it came to be, through the passage of time.’
After the Turkish invasion took place in Cyprus, in 1974, she was forced to leave her hometown and relocate as a refugee in the town of Limassol, where she is living ever since. A freelancer and an active board member of Cyprus photographic society since 1984, she is invited as a guest judge in several photography contests.
Erato Kantouna’s photographs are owned by private and corporate collectors.
